Are you interested in becoming a EQUIP Mentor? Here are some commonly asked quesitons:
What is a Faith Based Mentor? A person who commits to walk side by side with families for 4 - 6 months who are impacted by disruptive events in their lives e.g. job loss, death, divorce, etc. imposing psychological, physiological, and financial burdens on the family causing them to spiral downward toward “situational homelessness”.
How does Faith-based Family Mentoring work? Faith Based Family Mentors are used to transform the lives of families by promoting self-sufficiency through case management and relationship building. The mentor uses an EQUIP mentor-family friendly curriculum to strengthen the family with:
- Support
- Knowledge and Information
- Tools and Resources
Who do Faith Based Mentors work with? Mentors will work with families who fall between 80-200% of the poverty guidelines (e.g. $20-$40,000 family of 3). These families have incomes too high for government assistance and too low to maintain financial stability without effective money management skills.
What does one need to become a Faith based Family Mentor?
v High level of self-awareness
v Sincere desire to be personally involved with another person to helpThey achieve personal and financial goals
v Ability to communicate openly and non-judgmentally
v Skills in listening and an ability to establish a relationship, based on equal responsibility and respect
v Practical problem-solving skills and ability to suggest options and alternatives
v Sensitivity to persons of different educational, economic, cultural, or racial backgrounds.
v Ability to maintain a confidential relationship
v Spend minimum of 6 hours per month in service to his/her mentee. Time includes meetings, phone contact, record keeping, and travel time.
