EQUIP is ready to help families in financial distress

Many families are financially stressed despite the full-time employment of one or both parents. These families are without resources for unexpected circumstances and most publicly funded safety nets are not available until the family is in a complete free-fall. Many families in our community need help to avoid crisis and eventual homelessness. EQUIP Mentors work with families on the brink of losing their homes. These families are at risk for situational homelessness due to events such as divorce, illness, death or a reduction in household income resulting in overwhelming financial and psychological burdens.

Some Facts About Families

50 million American families have incomes too high to qualify for government benefits, yet too low to be middle income. Without resources in times of crisis (job loss, illness or injury, divorce or death), they are one paycheck away from homelessness.
In Dallas County, 74% of children in poverty live in a family where someone works full or part-time for at least part of the year.
Homeless mothers with children are the largest and fastest growing segment of the homeless population in Dallas County.
Keeping families in their homes is crucial for the stability of the children – a child loses six months of education for each school change.
The average age of a homeless child is 6 years.
